Action Learning Sets

Action Learning is a development method which brings together a small group of people who share their challenges, discuss solutions and extend their performance under the guidance of a skilled facilitator. It combines coaching methods with reflective learning, sharing of good practice, transformational leadership and peer–to–peer relationship building.

How does it work?

Participants use dedicated time to present their challenge/s to the group, setting out what they wish to achieve and the perceived barriers. Group members use advanced questioning and coaching interventions to challenge assumptions, clarify goals, identify options, release frustrations and agree actions. The emphasis is very much upon the action element – what will the participant do that's new, different or better when they leave the learning set. At subsequent sets, participants report on progress and extend performance, or move on to a new goal as appropriate. The method can be used to focus on a single, shared goal over time (a team project, for example) or can range to a free–form exploration of personal development issues led by the participants.

What does it involve?

An expert facilitator helps choose the best focus for the programme and then works with the group to make sure that progress is tangible and results are real. Action Learning Sets typically run for at least a period of 6 sessions, after which time they may become self–directed and facilitate progress themselves, continue with the facilitator, or dissolve. IBP can also offer learning sets tailored to compliment a planned or existing development programme and facilitator training to establish your own embedded action learning programme.

What are the benefits?

Participants will undoubtedly advance their own goals, or the project focus of the learning set, as a result of working with their peers. Action learning offers an environment within which non–participation is not an option and peer attention ensures that people are motivated to move ahead. Participants will significantly develop their analytical skills, improve advanced questioning and listening techniques and become more successful reflective learners. They will also acquire a better understanding of the wider organisation and develop more productive and meaningful relationships with their peers.

One of our expert facilitators would be happy to visit you to discuss the options and how we can meet your needs.
