The Borough of Barking and Dagenham in East London is home to around 164,000 people. The Council provides a wide range of education, health, housing and environmental services as part of its commitment to building communities and transforming lives. This commitment is set against a backdrop of high social deprivation, unemployment and some of the lowest levels of literacy and numeracy in the country.

The Senior Training Officer was involved in the Investors in People project from an early stage and explains: “A couple of our divisions had already achieved accreditation, which they felt was an extremely positive course of action. We therefore saw it as the ideal vehicle to assist our change management.

GS Contracts is a specialist interior company. It carries out complete design, manufacturing and installation work for the commercial, leisure and catering industry. Its work can be seen in bars, cafés, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, receptions and retail outlets throughout the UK and beyond.

Chelmsford College is a general further education college which was established over 40 years ago and it now occupies three sites in the town. The College has around 450 employees and caters for 4,500 young people and adult students each year over a wide range of academic, vocational and professional courses.

Based in Ickenham, Hillingdon, Douay Martyrs Roman Catholic School is a voluntary aided mixed secondary school which serves around 1400 pupils from a wide range of social backgrounds. The school is designated as a specialist engineering college and has also been validated externally as a government-sponsored training organisation.

A Berkshire primary school, which achieved an outstanding Ofsted inspectors’ report and is in the top 5% nationally for SATS results, is also embracing the ethos of Investors in People by looking at how it might continually improve the care of its pupils and staff.
